How to Make Peony Essential Oil? Here's the answer!

Peony essential oil is not commonly available because the peony flower does not naturally produce a significant amount of essential oil.

However, you can create a scented oil infused with the fragrance of peony flowers by using the enfleurage method.

Enfleurage is a traditional technique that involves extracting the aromatic compounds from flowers using a fat or oil. Here's a simplified version of the enfleurage process to create peony-scented oil:

Materials you will need:

  1. Fresh peony flowers
  2. Odorless carrier oil (such as jojoba oil or fractionated coconut oil)
  3. Glass or ceramic dish
  4. Glass jar with a tight-fitting lid
  5. Cheesecloth or muslin cloth
  6. Spatula or spoon

Instructions:

  1. Harvest fresh peony flowers early in the morning when the fragrance is strongest.
  2. Clean the flowers gently to remove any dirt or insects. It's essential to use organic, pesticide-free flowers.
  3. Spread a layer of the carrier oil in a glass or ceramic dish to create a thin coating. You can use enough oil to cover the bottom of the dish but not too much that it submerges the flowers completely.
  4. Place the peony flowers on top of the oil in a single layer, making sure they are evenly distributed.
  5. Cover the dish with a lid or plastic wrap and let it sit for 24 to 48 hours. During this time, the fragrance from the flowers will transfer to the oil.
  6. After 24 to 48 hours, carefully remove the wilted flowers and replace them with fresh ones. Repeat this process for several days or until the desired scent intensity is achieved. This step helps maximize the scent extraction.
  7. Once you're satisfied with the fragrance, strain the oil through a cheesecloth or muslin cloth to remove any flower particles. Use a spatula or spoon to press the flowers gently against the cloth to extract as much scented oil as possible.
  8. Transfer the strained oil into a glass jar with a tight-fitting lid. Make sure the jar is clean and dry before pouring the oil into it.
  9. Store the peony-scented oil in a cool, dark place away from direct sunlight. Properly stored, it should last for several months.

Please note that this method is time-consuming and requires a significant amount of fresh peony flowers to extract a noticeable scent.

Additionally, the resulting oil will be a fragrance-infused oil rather than a true essential oil.
